Wegmans Lemon Dill Finishing Butter Recalled due to Listeria Concerns

Epicurean Butter LLC announced a recall of its Wegmans Lemon Dill Finishing Butter, sold in 3.5 oz. tubs. The recall stems from concerns over contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Wegmans Food Markets in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, and Washington DC received shipments of the recalled butter.

SupHerb Farms, the frozen dill supplier for Epicurean Butter LLC, initiated an earlier recall. This recall is secondary to the SupHerb Farms recall.

The product comes packaged in a 3.5-ounce, black plastic cup with a Wegmans label around and on the lid. The lot numbers and best by dates subject to this recall are included in the recall announcement.

About Listeriosis and Listeria monocytogenes

Often, food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes does not look, smell, or otherwise appear spoiled. Further, symptoms can take up to 70 days after exposure to appear. Those symptoms include neck stiffness, vomiting, severe headaches, nausea, muscle aches, and persistent fevers. Listeriosis often mimics other illnesses, and requires very specific laboratory tests to diagnose.

Groups including pregnant women, newborn babies, people above the age  of 65, and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection. Pregnant women often only experience mild flu-like symptoms; however, infection can cause premature delivery, stillbirth, and infection in the newborn baby.
