Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Salame Sticks
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella, first identified by the Minnesota Department of Health, to Citterio brand Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks. The Salame Sticks were sold at Trader Joe’s and Wegmans. The CDC warns that they may also be sold at other stores. As of October 27th, a total of 21 infections were tied to the outbreak. Outbreak cases identified as of this time had onset dates between September 18 and October 3, 2021. Because it takes between 3 and 4 weeks to determine whether or not a case is part of an identified outbreak, more recent cases may not be included in the information released by the CDC.
The majority of known cases are individuals younger than 18 years old. The youngest person sickened in the outbreak is 2 years old, and the oldest is 75. The median age of sick people is 12 years old, and over 80% of the cases that have been reported are minors.
The cases identified at this time originated in 8 different states. California has the most cases of all states, with 8 confirmed outbreak cases. Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota have each confirmed 3 cases of the outbreak strain, while Kansas, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia have all reported 1.
There are 6 known hospitalizations linked to this outbreak. No deaths have been linked to the outbreak as of October 27th.
